New Horizons Affordable Housing Program
To date, the Central Islip Civic Council has built over 450 new homes for first-time home buyers. From 2-bedroom town homes to 4 bedroom single-family homes, the Council is a leader in providing creative, affordable housing solutions in Central Islip.
Emergency Food Pantry & Vegetable Garden
The Central Islip Civic Council runs a community food pantry for needy residents. In addition, a large vegetable garden supplements the food pantry with an abundance of fresh herbs and produce. The pantry is open to Central Islip residents on Monday and Thursday from 10am until 2pm. Food pantry clients must provide proof of need (social security and/or benefit card, disability, unemployment, worker’s comp, etc.) for each family member requiring food.
Recreation and Cultural Events
The Council provides cultural and recreation events such as festivals, art shows, talent shows, craft programs for adults and children, historic education programs, summer camp and other fun community events. The Historic Heines Homestead, home of the Central Islip Civic Council, is the perfect backdrop for a host of activities.
Step Back in Time
Step Back in Time provides school children with the opportunity to experience daily life on a Long Island homestead at the turn of the century. The Heines Homestead is a 5 acre historic homestead complete with farm animals, gardens, a working blacksmith shop, one-room school house, nature trail and much more. Students spend a fun, hands-on day at the Homestead and BOCES reimburses school districts for the trip cost. Geared specifically for 4th graders, Step Back in Time can be tailored for any grade level, pre-K through 12. Camps and scout groups are also welcome.
Economic & Community Development
The Council has actively encouraged economic development in Central Islip, knowing strong business investment brings employment, housing and recreation opportunities. The Council was instrumental in bringing New York Institute of Technology, the Federal and County Court Complexes, Touro Law College, Cintas, College Woods and others to Central Islip.
